Does Photoshop Generative Fill Work Offline?
The Adobe Firefly AI suite contains powerful tools that are quick and easy to use. The question on the minds of creatives everywhere is this: can you use Adobe’s AI features offline?
Adobe Photoshop’s generative fill requires a fast, stable internet connection. Generating anything using the Adobe Firefly AI suite requires an internet connection, but utilizing previously generated layers can be done offline. Users can take their projects containing AI-generated layers offline.
Even if you have a stable internet connection, you may still not be able to access generative fill or other AI features. Don’t worry I’m going to help you get your generative AI features working in this article.
Do you need the internet to use Photoshop generative fill?

According to Adobe’s website, the internet is required to use Photoshop generative fill. You need a fast, stable internet connection to use this feature. Adobe’s website states that an internet connection is required for generative fill “at this time”. This could mean that Adobe could have plans to make generative fill available for offline use at some point in the future. But, this is pure speculation.
“In order to use generative AI in Photoshop at this time, you need to be connected to the internet.”
Adobe
Now, let’s be clear here, the term “use generative fill” refers to the actual action of generating something using Adobe’s AI tools. This means that, while you need an internet connection to generate things using Adobe’s AI suite, you can use layers that you have previously generated while connected to the internet.
So, theoretically, you can generate anything you need while connected to the internet then disconnect and make any offline edits you want. You do not need an internet connection to use previously generated AI layers in Adobe Photoshop.
Adobe Firefly, their AI suite, accesses Adobe’s content library to help generate images for you. This is Photoshop’s generative fill cannot be used offline.
Why can’t I use generative fill in Photoshop?

Although Generative Fill is out of beta testing and is widely available to Adobe customers, there are some reasons why you may not have access to Generative Fill. Some of these are easier to fix than others. If you are having trouble accessing generative fill, do a quick run-through of this list.
1. You are not signed in to Creative Cloud
Adobe Creative Cloud subscription provides access to various features and services, including those within Photoshop. Generative fill is a feature that is directly tied to your subscription. If you’re not signed in to your Creative Cloud account, the software will restrict access to the Photoshop application and generative fill within it.
2. Your Photoshop application is not up-to-date
Adobe regularly releases updates to Photoshop, introducing new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. Generative fill, being a relatively new feature, is not available in older versions of Photoshop. If your application is not up-to-date, you could be missing out on access to generative fill. Updating Photoshop to the latest version ensures that you have access to the most recent features and improvements.
3. Adobe has not confirmed your birthdate
Adobe requires users to confirm their birthdate for age verification purposes when accessing certain features that have age restrictions such as generative fill. Failure to provide or confirm your birthdate within your Adobe account settings could result in restricted access.
To update your birthdate in Adobe’s systems, log into Behance. If you’re already logged in, try logging out and then back in; sometimes this can help get generative AI features in Creative Cloud working.
4. You are not connected to the internet
Some features in Photoshop rely on internet connectivity to function properly. This includes license verification, feature activation, and accessing cloud-based resources. Generative fill requires access to Adobe’s servers for processing and content retrieval. Without a fast, stable internet connection, Photoshop restricts access to generative fill and other online-dependent features.
5. You have run out of generative credits
Adobe has implemented a credit-based system for generative AI technologies. Users are allocated a certain number of credits to use these features each month, and once they’re exhausted, access to the generative AI (Adobe Firefly Suite) features is restricted until additional credits are purchased or allocated. If you’ve used up all your generative credits, you’ll need to upgrade your plan or wait until the next month of your billing to continue using generative AI in Photoshop.
